Chapter 37. The Child Murderer

A young girl who for a long time had resisted temptation allowed herself to be fooled by the devil and gave in to a young man’s will. She became pregnant, and when the time for her delivery neared, she fled to a hidden place where she immediately killed the child that she bore.

Soon afterward, she was gripped by the bitterest regret, but at the same time she shunned confessing to her crime. One night as she lay in her bed she pleaded fervently with God, asking him to help her and to give her a sign if she could hope to gain his forgiveness.

Suddenly, three drops of blood fell on the back of her hand. She took this to be a sign sent from God, and then went on praying and streaming with tears she begged for an explanation of this wonder. The Lord himself appeared to her, opening the wound in his side and his blessed heart and said, “I am opening this breast and this heart for your and for all those holies’ sakes, that you should also open your heart and cleanse it from all sins. This way, you can receive help.”

The Lord then disappeared, but the girl was happy and thanked God. She confessed to an old priest all of her sins with fervent regret and streaming tears. Some of these fell on her hand and dissolved the drops of blood that she had been unable to remove by any kind of washing.

And so was she freed from her sins by God’s grace.
