When Archbishop Remy consecrated King Ludvig (Chlodovech, or Clovis I) and prepared to do the anointing, it became apparent that the holy oil was not present because the one whose task it was to carry the ointment had been found to be of unworthy of his royal lineage.
Suddenly, a dove flew down from heaven carrying a vial in its beak. Remy anointed Ludvig with the oil in the vial. — From then until this day, the same vial is used when French kings are crowned and who through this oil receive the power to heal the first leper led before him by the laying on of his right hand.
(Translator’s note: this is a variation on the Legend of the Holy Ampoule involving Remy (St. Remigius) and the baptism of Clovis and the basis for subsequent coronation of French kings in Riems.)
