They were surrounding her, ready to take care of her. Just like Vince had known they would. He watched her get settled with the pretty blond doc, and then he headed to the front entrance. The TSP would be coming soon to take her statement. He’d just meet them outside.

It took them longer than it should have to reach the hospital. And not just because the building across the street was still blocked off as a crime scene. It probably would be for a long time to come.

There wasn’t much left of it but a brick skeleton now. It stood out amid the rest of the complex, and not just for what now surrounded it.

That fire had changed a lot of things.

And it had all centered on the missing Solpalmitraln.

The COM had recently discovered that more than a dozen boxes of the experimental drug had been stolen by Jessica Ward from the hospital pharmacy.

No one knew why she had done it—or how she had managed it.

Vince had been tasked with finding all the flaws in the security policies and systems that the previous COMs had had installed. And finding ways to compensate for or alleviate those flaws.

He’d also been tasked with going over all the video they had of Jessica Ward. And the delivery guy from Claireson Pharm, the company responsible for manufacturing Solpalmitraln in the first place.

There was a reason that girl had taken those boxes of the liquid drug, and Vince knew it. Most likely, it had to do with cold hard cash.

Everything of that nature usually did. Solpalmitraln had almost gotten little Lacy McGareth killed, after all. Nothing good was coming out of Solpalmitraln, and Vince knew it.

Thankfully, the new COM did, too. Rafe Holden-Deane had the best interests of the hospital at heart. He prayed the guy got back up on his feet soon. He was needed around the hospital. Vince strongly suspected the board would be pushing Solpalmitraln all over again.

Claireson Pharm was the big cash cow, after all.

He spoke with the TSP officers; he suspected they were rookies from the freshness of their faces and the innocence in the young woman’s eyes. Once he’d answered their questions, Vince led them inside where Cherise McAlister waited. He wanted to check on her one more time, himself.

And offer her a ride, if necessary. She shouldn’t be driving herself home tonight. The fear and adrenaline would eventually catch up with her.
