PET SHOP. JOEY is looking through the window toward the pets, smoking a cigarette. He starts off, left, as LINDA runs on from left.
LINDA
Joey, I’ve been looking all over for you. I spoke to Mrs. Simpson and she said . . .
JOEY
Oh sure, sure—I’m planning on getting out of town.
LINDA
Out of town?
JOEY
New York first—some offer in a musical comedy. They’re after me—again.
LINDA
I was hoping you’d come over and have supper at my sister’s house. Remember me telling you about my sister.
JOEY
Your sister?
LINDA
Her husband is in the trucking business.
JOEY
Oh sure, sure. Well, maybe next time when I’m passing through. These big New York shows they may bore me.
LINDA
Won’t you please? (She touches his sleeve. JOEY pulls away and turns back to the pets) Well, good-bye. I guess I’d better be going.
(She holds hand to JOEY.)
JOEY
(Shakes her hand without looking.
LINDA starts off. JOEY looks up)
I may shoot you a wire and let you know how things are.
LINDA
Oh, that would be wonderful. Good-bye.
(She runs off, left.)
JOEY
(Looking after her)
And thanks, thanks a million.
(He turns back to the pet shop. A Girl enters from left, passes JOEY, stops and looks at the pets, then exits right. After she leaves, JOEY turns again toward stage left, where LINDA exited, moves left, turns slowly and exits right as the
