CONSUMER EXPENDITURE SURVEY

The Consumer Expenditure Survey (CE) is an annual survey of American consumer behavior, conducted by the US Census Bureau under contract with the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The history of the dataset goes back to the late nineteenth century, though the modern and annual-based survey began in 1980. One of the major goals of the survey is to update a cost-of-living index, known as the Consumer Price Index (CPI); however, given its comprehensive and accurate information on consumers’ spending behaviors and their socioeconomic characteristics, it has long been used by researchers to analyze and explain consumer behaviors.

The CE comprises two independent surveys: the Diary Survey and the Interview Survey. The Diary Survey collects expenditure data on small and frequently purchased items and is reported by a self-administered diary, while the Interview Survey is designed to collect data on expenditures that are relatively large (e.g., durable goods) or that are regularly bought (e.g., rent, insurance). Given the superior performance of the Interview Survey found in Bee et al. (2012), this book mainly used the Interview microdata for analyzing certain consumer groups’ behavior.

The microdata not only provide individual household-level information on purchased items, specified by hundreds of Universal Classified Codes (UCC), but also contain information on demographic and socioeconomic characteristics of the household. Since the quarterly Interview Survey covers approximately 7,000 households across the country (nationally representative), the sample size of the annualized dataset is about 35,000 consumer units. All the analyses are weighted using sampling weights to represent national estimates and are performed through statistical package Stata version 11.1.
