CHAPTER 27

GIOVANNA WANTED TO HURT MAGGIE. The way she saw it, Maggie pretty much deserved every nasty comment posted on the site.

Who got all jealous when Kat and Alexa started paying attention to Giovanna last May? Maggie. Who drew the line in the sand and made Giovanna choose between friendship with her or with Kat and Alexa? Maggie. Who never called —and never once tried to change Giovanna’s mind? Maggie. Who never stopped by her house —or invited her over —all summer? Maggie.

Even now, nearly two months after school started, who never asked Giovanna to sit with her during lunch like they used to do? Maggie. Yeah, Maggie deserved what she was getting.

Giovanna sat cross-legged on her bed and read the posts again. Who in the world was this jerk Robin Hood anyway? He was messing things up.

Why is it some people land on their feet no matter how many times they get knocked down? Actually, that wasn’t true. Maggie didn’t land on her feet. She was on her face. Then stinkin’ Robin Hood swooped in from cyberspace and scooped her up. How did that happen? Maggie, who practically ditched Giovanna, comes up with some secret hero who defends her and makes everyone else look stupid. It wasn’t even remotely fair.

Yeah, Maggie got all the breaks. Her mom. Robin Hood.

What would it be like to have a friend like Robin Hood? Maggie had been that kind of friend —in another life. At least she seemed that way. Some friend she turned out to be.

Giovanna put her phone on the desk and plugged it in. Stop thinking about it, girl. She looked in the mirror hanging next to her desk.

“You’ve got friends, sweetie.” Giovanna tried to mimic her mom’s voice. Her mom —a true expert on meaningful relationships. “Kat. Alexa. They’re worth a dozen Maggies.”

Right. Did Giovanna really have friends —or did they have her?
