CRAGG VALE

CRAGG VALE, HEBDEN BRIDGE

6/10 RATING

Cragg Vale isn’t the toughest climb, but it is the longest continuous uphill gradient in England, as a sign at the base proudly boasts. Winding out of Mytholmroyd, the climb starts as the road crosses Cragg Brook. The slope is very gentle at first but then kicks up slightly as you enter Cragg Vale. The further you progress through the village, the steeper it gets, and the hardest part of the climb comes as you leave the protection of the houses. The gradient eases back and the going is good, however, having left the shelter of buildings and trees, you’re now left exposed to the full force of any wind. The road continues straight with a slight dogleg towards its peak, and as you wind up your sprint for the large sign on the left, the horizon appears to shimmer. It’s not a mirage though, it’s the reservoir butting right up to the edge of the road, and it will follow you the rest of the way to the finish at the T-junction.
