A LETTER TO THE SHANGHAI EDUCATORS UNION

JANUARY 31, 1989

To the Shanghai Educators Union and all attendees:

Thank you for your letter. Because of other obligations, I am unable to attend your Spring Festival gathering to celebrate the New Year with you. For this, I apologize deeply. I am writing to send you special regards and New Year’s greetings. I also want to express heartfelt good wishes and sincere appreciation to all those teachers at universities, secondary schools, primary schools, and kindergartens, and to those of you at the Educators Union, for your hard work and great contributions of the past year. Your mission is a sacred one that entails tiring work and provides minimal compensation. However, your achievements will forever be etched in the hearts of the people. In the coming year, the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee and the municipal government will be adopting some important measures to revitalize education in Shanghai. Through our joint efforts, we will surely have good results.
