An Unexpected Guest

“Two years have passed since then. A month ago, Percy Armitage did me the honor of asking my hand in marriage. We are to be married in the spring.

“But two days ago, some repairs were started, and my bedroom wall was pierced. I had to move into the room where my sister died and to sleep in the very bed in which she slept. Imagine my terror when, last night, I heard the low whistle which had been the herald of her death. I sprang up and lit the lamp, but nothing was seen in the room. I was too shaken to go to bed again, so I dressed. As soon as it was daylight, I came here with the one object of seeing you.”

“You have done wisely,” you tell her.

“I say so,” whispers Watson. “She is wise enough to trick even you. This is surely a trap set by the villain, Professor Moriarty.”

There may be something to Dr. Watson’s concern. Miss Stoner’s tale is too perfect. It almost seems made up, with every detail chosen to arouse your interest. Could this be the trap? Should you send this woman away? If you do, you will either be rescuing yourself from danger or sentencing the poor girl to a horrible fate. What will you choose to do?
