chapter 5

Hair

Our hair craves natural, nutrient-dense, food-grade products as much as our bodies do. In this chapter you’ll find recipes for shampoos, conditioners, masks, treatments and even styling products. You’ll be amazed by how fast your hair responds to some of these treatments, by the difference in your hair’s health over time and by how much money you’ll save using hand-crafted products!

Cleansing Recipes

Whether your hair is dry, oily, or normal, you can make your own shampoo at home! There’s even a recipe for an all-natural dry shampoo . . . once you try it, you’ll never buy another chemical-filled version again!

The most important thing you need to know about natural shampoos is that they are far less stripping than the store-bought versions and much better at preserving your hair’s natural and protective oils (trust me, you want those), but due to product buildup that a lot of us inevitably have from years of commercial styling products and conditioners, you may want to use a clarifying rinse (like my Olive Oil–Lemon Clarifying Shampoo, page 82) before trying these shampoos for the first time. It will make your transition to homemade shampoos a bit easier!
