WHIPPING KNOT

Once a rope is cut, the strands tend to unravel and the rope gets loose. The whipping knot prevents a line from coming undone. The whipping knot is used on all ropes as soon as they have been cut.

STEP 1

Take the line in which you’ll tie the whipping knot. Make a bight—where the curve lies at the very end of the rope. Then turn the line that you’ll use to tie the whipping knot up toward the end of the rope, turning it the opposite direction of that in which it is plaited.

STEP 2

The whipping knot should also be as long as the rope is wide and stop ¼ of an inch (½ a centimeter) from the end. The end of the bight should not be covered by the whipping knot. Pass the running end through the bight.

STEP 3

Gently pull to pass the bight and the line through it under the whipping knot. The rope with the whipping knot is cut at a length of 1¼ to 1¾ of an inch (3 to 4 centimeters).
