Want a creative way to spread God’s Word? Design and make a scripture prayer book to distribute. Older children can write their favorite Bible verses, one to a page. Younger children can provide drawings for the cover and the interior. Your family may choose to use a spiral notebook or have several pages that each person has written bound together at your local office supply store. A loose-leaf binder also works well. Additional verses can then be periodically added. An artistic idea would be to punch holes on the left-hand side of each of the verse pages. Then attach them with colorful yarn.
Flip through God’s Word to discover which verses you will use. Some suggestions:
• Ps. 80:3
• Prov. 4:23
• Micah 7:7
• Matt. 15:10
• Matt. 21:22
• John 3:16
• John 14:6
• Rom. 6:23
• Eph. 2:4
• Eph. 2:8-10
• 1 Thess. 5:16-18
• Heb. 12:2-3
• Phil. 4:8
If multiple books are needed, have your children write the verses, illustrate the pages, and then have copies made of each complete book at your office supply store. Our family designed scripture prayer books using small spiral notebooks. We took turns writing our favorite verses, and our daughters drew the illustrations, one per page. We mailed these as Christmas gifts to our Christian and unbelieving family members and friends.
This project makes excellent gifts. And not only is this a great witnessing tool, but it also can help the recipient (and your family as well) memorize Bible verses.
Up for Discussion
How many prayer books did your family make? To whom did you distribute them? Did you think of other clever ways to personalize the book? Why is a homemade prayer book more meaningful than a store-bought one? What are the benefits of such a book?
Why is John 3:16 a good verse to be included in your scripture prayer book?
Read Matt. 28:19-20. How can knowing that God is with you always encourage your faith? How can this encourage the one(s) to whom you give the scripture prayer book?
Why does God need disciples in every corner of the world? How can you be a disciple in your own hometown?
Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.
—Matt. 28:19-20
