74. Make Your Voice Count

Is there a cause that is close to your family’s heart? Protecting the unborn? Joining in the National Day of Prayer? Making sure our country remains free by allowing the right to exhibit the Ten Commandments? Protecting our children in the fight against violence in today’s media? Involve your family in making their voices count for a good cause.

Last year my daughters and I joined in the pro-life moment of silence in front of our local courthouse. The cause was a respectful yet important one. We joined others in prayer for the many babies who never had a chance to be born, to be loved, or to go to school. We prayed for those who have had abortions, that God would heal their hearts. And we prayed for those who were contemplating abortions, that they would choose adoption instead. I explained to my children Ps. 139:13-14, which states, “You created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”

Whatever cause is close to your family’s heart, be sure to explain to your children why it’s important to respectfully protest those things that go against God’s Word and how one voice does make a difference.

Up for Discussion

What cause did your family take a stand for in this project? Why do you think God wants us to stand up against unrighteousness? If the thought of doing so is terrifying, what prayer could you pray asking for God’s strength in such a circumstance? Ps. 41:1-3 talks of God’s protection. How is this helpful when you find yourself in the midst of having to fight for what’s right according to God’s Word? What would happen if no one voiced his or her opinion against pornography or violence in the media?

Read in 1 Sam. 1 the story of Hannah’s sadness at not being able to have a child. God ultimately blessed her with Samuel, who would later become one of God’s prophets. How might the gift of a child from a woman who chooses adoption instead of abortion bless a couple who would otherwise be unable to have children?

To prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

—Eph. 4:12-13
