Quotations from the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola are from the Ganss edition, Ignatius of Loyola: Spiritual Exercises and Selected Works, ed. George E. Ganss, SJ (Mahwah, NJ: Paulist Press, 1991). I have followed the standard practice of citing the Exercises by paragraph number rather than by the page on which they appear in any particular published edition. For example, Ignatius’s guidelines for making certain kinds of decisions are cited SpEx 179–183, or simply 179–183.
Quotations from the autobiography of St. Ignatius are from the translation by Parmananda R. Divarkar, SJ, A Pilgrim’s Testament: The Memoirs of Saint Ignatius of Loyola (1983). As with the Spiritual Exercises, I have followed the convention of citing by paragraph number.
Portions of this book first appeared in “Faith in Focus: Aging with Ignatius (Applying the Spiritual Exercises in the Later Stages of Life)” America, Vol. 214 No. 11, March 28, 2016, pp. 27–29.
To protect the privacy of those who shared their stories in chapters 2 and 4, I have used middle names or pseudonyms.
