The Miracle of the Moon

It was the ninth year of Prophethood. The boycott towards the Muslims was still going on. Contrary to what the non-believers had hoped for, because of the hardships the Muslims had to endure, more people became aware of Islam and the religion spread out even more. Frustrated at not being able to stop the spread, some of the Qurayshi non-believers had a certain request from our Prophet. They said, “If you really are a Prophet, then split the Moon in half in this night with a full moon. Let it be so that one half is visible over Mount Abu Qubays and the other half over the Mount Quayqian.”

In response to their request, the Messenger of Allah asked, “If I do as you ask, will you accept the faith?” “Yes! We will accept the faith,” they answered.

Then, our Prophet prayed lengthily for a while to Allah the Almighty. After finishing his prayer, he raised his right hand and with his index finger drew a line right through the Moon. After this action, half of the moon was over Mount Abu Qubays while the other half was over the Mount Quayqian. Turning to the ones surrounding him, Allah’s Messenger declared, “Let all of you be a witness!”

Nevertheless, even after witnessing such a miracle some of the non-believers merely said, “Muhammad put a spell over us.”

Others said, “Even if Muhammad did put a spell over us, he couldn’t have put it over others too! Let’s ask the people who have come to Mecca from other places. Have they also seen what we have seen? If they have, then this means it’s true. If they haven’t then there’s certainly magic in it.”

When it was morning, they asked the people coming into Mecca. All of them affirmed that they too had seen the Moon split into two. Despite everything, the non-believers refused to believe even after witnessing this very obvious miracle.
