Print 2: Four 7.6cm (3in) squares
Black fabric: 30.5cm (12in) square and 20.3cm × 39.4cm (8in × 151⁄2in) for lining
Scraps of fabric
Fusible webbing
White and black stranded cotton (floss)
1. Sew the nine 7.6cm (3in) squares together in three rows of three, in alternate colours, using 6mm (1⁄4in) seams. Press seams.
2. Back the black fabric square with fusible webbing (enough for three motifs). Use the templates and follow the instructions given for fusing and embroidery.
3. Place bag front and back right sides facing and sew along bottom.
4. For the handles, sew two strips right sides together down the long sides. Turn right way; press. Repeat with other strips. Lay the lining fabric right side up. Pin handles in position at short ends, facing inwards. Put the bag front on top, right side down. Pin together, aligning edges and sew together all round, leaving a gap in one long side. Remove pins, clip corners, turn right side out. Press gap edges under.
5. Quilt if desired. Fold the bag in half and machine sew down the sides 3mm (1⁄8in) from the edge. Blanket stitch down the sides with six strands of black stranded cotton.
