By the time Bobby has overseen the removal of the buggy from the sea, cycled back to the Estate Office and dealt with a grumble about the degree of evening cloud cover, which has left a gaggle of stargazers ‘extremely disappointed’, Kit appears asking for his supply box.

‘I’m after my sailing stuff. I just need to get out in the sunshine while we have it, you know.’

‘Good plan. Have you seen your mother?’ asks Bobby.

‘Yes.’

‘And? Is she well?’

‘She is firing on all cylinders,’ replies Kit, making a face which does not convey complete and absolute joy at the reunion.

‘Of course,’ replies Bobby, in a manner intended to agree with anything Kit is suggesting, while providing no evidence of actually siding with him.

‘Will you do me a favour and take your mother’s supply boxes 353over to Falcon while you’re at it?’ asks Bobby. ‘Save me a job. We have a golf buggy free right now if you could run them up.’

While Kit is a little annoyed with this request, as it means seeing his mother again, he agrees. He tries hard to fit in with the community here. He occupies a strange position on the island – not exactly a visitor, not exactly a worker. Doing a favour for Bobby will go down well.

And he does feel sorry for his mother. It is true that he’s been avoiding her. But, while grief brings some families together, sadly, theirs is not one of them.
