PART 4:
Then and Now

A question asked of the participants was how they thought nursing had changed or what they saw as the biggest changes over the course of their career in nursing. It elicited a myriad of responses as well as thoughts and feelings about their profession. This group of women had seen the explosion of technology in health care, the introduction of numerous groups of health care workers into the hospital setting, married women entering nursing school, men entering the nursing profession, the introduction of the nurses’ union, their schools of nursing close, and nursing education move to the university, as well as a changing emphasis in nursing practice and health care delivery. But for many the most significant change was the loss of important symbols like their uniform and cap and what they thought this meant for nursing today. The comparisons between nursing in their day and today were inevitable. They talked of the changes they saw in nursing and health care and voiced their opinion of these changes. The feelings expressed about their own nursing career were probably the most enlightening and provided significant insight into who they were as nurses and women.
