The Kindness of Strangers: Wartime Foster Parents and Carers

The stories within this chapter illustrate the kindness shown to many evacuees by the foster parents who took them in, as well as the local people who befriended them and offered their help. There is no official figure for the number of people who had evacuees billeted in their homes and, at the time, some were certainly more willing to do so than others.
