“What the fuck is going on here?” I asked, meeting Haven’s watering eyes.
Killer pointed his gun at her head. But then he pointed his gun at me.
“Which one of you am I going to kill first?”
I held up my hands. “Killer. Let go of the girl.”
If I rushed him, he could shoot her easily. I couldn’t risk it.
“You mean, your daughter?”
“Killer, let go of my daughter.”
He ignored me and focused on Maren.
“Good work,” he said to her. He tossed Haven into Maren’s arms. “You take care of the girl. I will take care of Leviathan.”
I looked to Maren, but she wouldn’t meet my gaze. She put her hand over Haven's mouth.
I died inside.
Killer said, “Maren. Or should I call you Spooky? You’ve earned your patch, girl. You will earn your backpack when you dispose of his spawn.”
Maren said, “Yes, Sir.”
She dragged Haven into the funhouse, and I couldn't believe my eyes.
Maren had betrayed me. My heart didn’t just break, it exploded into a million pieces.
My daughter’s life was on the line because of my mistake.
Killer said, “It's all over Leviathan. The Asphalt Gods are here, and we are going to wipe all you boys out.” He glanced around. “I couldn’t imagine my luck. I've already got a clubhouse here for when I moved back to Tennessee.”
Killer wanted to get me talking, but all I could think about was my daughter. And about how Maren deceived me. How foolish I'd been. And I was going to lose my child because of it. If not my own life. Because I trusted Maren. I believed she loved a monster like me.
I didn’t care about my life, but wanting to save Haven, I tackled Killer and took his gun, easily knocking him to the ground. The old biker came at me with a large rock. I took a blow to the head but still tried to fight as long as I could.
