Jim Parker is a skinny seventeen-year-old kid who hasn't yet grown into his bones. He's living in a small box cabin on the edge of the Old Quarter, caring for his sick mother.
His mother is suffering from a long-term illness, her health deteriorating year by year. She hasn't been able to work for as long as Jim can remember. He cares for her as best he can, but the medical costs are rising out of control and her savings ran out months ago. He does odd jobs in the city to make ends meet but it's hard to find work when you look like Jim.
The neighbourhood kids pick on him because of his albinism - a medical condition that leaves him with pink eyes and pale white skin and hair. He's running out of credits. He's running out of places to go for loans. Another beating from the local kids is the last thing he needs.
Jim failed the physical test when he tried to get into the Security Forces last year. Twelve months have passed and not much has changed. He's the same skinny kid as he was then, but he's more desperate this time. It's time to apply again, even that means he'll never be the same again.
