Opposite: Salem Street at the corner of Cross Street in the early 1960s takes on a festive atmosphere as a one-man band serenades shoppers on a busy Saturday afternoon. In the center, a street performer plays an accordion, while he also plays the drum strapped to his back and moves his head to make the bells attached to his metal hat ring in a tune to serenade those around him. An accordion player, on the left, accompanies him to the delight of busy passersby. (Courtesy Vito Aluia.)
