1. On modern maps the road to Puisieux is the D919. The track that now leads to the Chinese War Cemetery is roughly on the line of the strongpoints east of the village.

1. Frank Udall was one of the few soldiers to have been awarded two bars to the Military Medal: the first on 28 March 1918 and the second at Croisilles later the same year.

1. XIX Corps was the only unit which was still serving exclusively under the banner of the Fifth Army. Of its three remaining corps, XVIII Corps had already been relieved; VII Corps, it may be remembered, had retired north of the dividing line of the Somme, away from the main force of the Fifth Army, and for this reason had been put under the orders of the Third Army; while on the south, the remnants of III Corps were still with the French around Montdidier and were only now being sent back piecemeal.
