MORE ABOUT KARATE

Karate is a martial art, or a fighting style. Karate began in Japan. It was first taught in the United States in 1955. Since then, it has become the most common martial art in the United States.

Karate has ranks for levels of skill levels. Each rank has a different belt color. White belts are for beginners. Black belts are for karate masters. It takes years of practice to earn a black belt in karate.

In karate, students learn self-defense. Students are taught many skills, including blocks, stances, punches, and kicks. Students practice by sparring with each other.

Karate involves fighting, but it focuses on self-discipline. Students are taught to respect others and to use fighting as a last resort.
