Not in the Flesh
JORDAN CORNTHWAITE
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Adam Colston lives and works in Exeter in Devon with his partner, Sarah, and son Ben. When not writing fiction, thinking about writing fiction, or procrastinating about writing fiction, he helps people with drug dependencies.
The first book Adam read for pleasure was Lord of the Rings at the age of eleven. Prior to that, he’d preferred comics. However from then on—to his mother and father’s relief—he began to read proper books. His mother introduced him to science fiction with a copy of The Caves of Steel by Isaac Asimov, beginning a lifelong fascination with robots.
Adam began writing in late 2006 and was especially encouraged by his family. Adam’s father was an inspiration, having published a few short stories of his own. Sadly, he passed away in 2009 before hearing that Adam had won the Contest.
In 2008, Escape Velocity Magazine published Adam’s first story, “An Empty Kind of Love” (a robot story). The story was nominated for a British Science Fiction Association Award.
There have been a few other published stories in both print magazines and various online venues. In 2009, following two outright rejections from the Writers of the Future, Adam decided to focus solely on winning the Contest; his plan was to submit his best story every quarter without fail. It was a good plan, he thought, that would keep him busy for the next twenty years at least.
The plan backfired when his next entry won.
ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR
Jordan is a California native fond of wildlife and the outdoors. She draws inspiration for her artwork from her experiences being out in nature as well as from world travels. She has lived in northern England, traveled through many countries in Europe and is recently returned from Phnom Pehn, Cambodia, where she was doing art therapy with children living in group homes.
It was while on a camping trip in 2006 that it occurred to her that there was little else she enjoyed as much as drawing and creating and she decided to switch her focus from psychology to illustration. Numerous art awards and scholarships have encouraged her to continue to develop her craft and take on the somewhat daunting task of pursuing art professionally.
Aside from illustration, Jordan is also passionate about animation, character design and sculpture. She completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in illustration/animation in spring 2010, and is currently working part-time as an assistant animator on the short film Countin’ on Sheep while eagerly pursuing a challenging career that will continue to develop her skills.
