Top 10Security and Health

1Emergencies

In an emergency, dial 911 for fire, police, or medical assistance. Hotels can also arrange for a doctor or ambulance.

2Health Services

Local health standards are of a high quality. There are hospitals in most cities, and doctors and clinics in smaller towns. Your hotel should be able to recommend a doctor. Invest in insurance, as fees for medical services in the U.S. are extremely high. Most health-insurance plans are accepted, but those who do not have coverage may be denied service.

3Dental Care

California has a very efficient dental infrastructure, and most towns have a choice of private dentists. Ensure that your travel insurance covers dental care, as it is expensive.

4Pharmacies

It is always a good idea to bring along enough prescription medicines to last the duration of your stay. Still, there are plenty of pharmacies throughout California. Check with U.S. Customs in advance to ensure that any prescription medicines you wish to bring from overseas are allowed.

5Police

California Highway Patrol (CHP) vehicles patrol major highways, and local police patrol cities. The police are highly efficient and professional and most cities have their own police force, in addition to County Sheriff’s departments.

6Drinking and Driving

The CHP and local police strictly enforce drink-driving laws, and sobriety checkpoints are frequently set up. Avoid drinking and driving. If you plan on wine-tasting, temper your intake, drink plenty of water, and consider designating a non-drinking driver. Call 911 if you spot a drunk driver.

7Outdoors Concerns

Protect yourself against California’s intense summer sun: use sunscreens and carry a shade hat when spending time outdoors. Back-country hikers should be on the lookout for rattlesnakes and poison-oak, and be aware that mountain lions are found in many wilderness areas. Stay on marked trails. There are few biting insects in Wine Country.

8Earthquakes

Although extremely rare, the possibility of a severe earthquake is an ever-present danger in Wine Country, which lies close to the San Andreas Fault. If a major earthquake occurs, take cover under something sturdy if you are indoors, keep away from glass and walls, and do not use elevators. If you’re outdoors, stay away from buildings and tall objects. If driving, stop your vehicle in an open space away from utility wires.

9Wildfires

In summer months, the high temperatures and lack of rain can cause fast-moving forest wildfires, often fanned by hot winds. On such occasions, roads may be closed and mandatory evacuation orders may be enforced. Never hike in areas close to wildfires. Extinguish cigarettes properly and adhere to local regulations regarding campfires.

10Women Travelers

Women are treated fully as equals in California and undue flirting is not present. Still, common sense precautions are wise for women travelers. Avoid walking alone at night, especially in dark places or places where help may not be available, and leave expensive jewelry at home.
