“How do I tell these people we can’t help them?”
Brady reached forward and touched Josie’s arm again, letting his hand rest there for a moment. In the old days, he’d have hugged her close and given her the reassurance she was asking for. But this would have to do. “I don’t think they think that at all. Everyone in town has been commenting about how pleased they are that you’re stepping up to save the stables. It means a lot to everyone, and I’m sure, if your father were here, it would have meant a lot to him.”
“Maybe.” She kicked at the ground. “Funny how quickly I revert to being that scared little girl.”
He gave her arm a final squeeze. “I know it’s not the same, but I’m here for you.” The warm smile he got in return gave him hope.
“Thank you. Things may have changed between us, but it does feel good to know I’m not alone.”
