Other Techniques

Felting  Place item in a pillowcase and close it with a rubber band. Place the pillowcase in washing machine with a pair of jeans to increase the agitation. Set the washing machine to the hottest temperature and lowest water level. Add a small amount of soap and begin the wash cycle. Before the cycle ends, stop the machine and check the felting progress. If more is needed, reset the wash cycle and continue. It’s important to check the felting progress often, about every 5 to 10 minutes, to ensure you get the desired size. Measure the dimensions at each check, and as you near the desired size, check more frequently. Air dry.

Pompom  Cut a square of cardboard a little larger than the size of the pompom you want to make. Make a slit down the center, stopping just past the center point.

  1. 1. Center a 12"/30.5 cm piece of yarn in the slit, leaving both ends hanging.
  2. 2. Wrap yarn around the cardboard to desired thickness of pompom. Cut the end of the yarn.
  3. 3. Tie the wrapped yarn tightly together with the piece of yarn that’s hanging in the slit.
  4. 4. Cut the wrapped yarn along both edges of the cardboard.
  5. 5. Remove the cardboard, fluff up the pompom, and trim any uneven ends.

Satin stitch  With yarn threaded on a yarn needle, bring yarn from wrong side to right side at one edge of the shape you are stitching (figure 1). Insert needle from front to back at opposite edge of the shape, then bring it from back to front along the design edge directly next to where the yarn originally exited (figure 2). Continue in this manner until shape is covered with thread.

Whipstitch  Holding the two pieces to be joined together, *insert threaded needle from back to front through one stitch on each piece and pull through; repeat from * until the pieces are joined.

Working in back bump of chain  Insert hook into back bump of crochet chain and work stitch as indicated.
