he sky was darkening, and the moon had spread out. The city lights were spreading over the streets, and raindrops were falling from the sky; it was pouring once again as Angela grabbed onto the steering wheel of her car. The words that Toby had spoken were still fresh in her mind.
“Promise me you’ll go see him.”
She sighed to herself; she knew he was right. David had done nothing but be there for her from the start, and he was the last person on Earth who deserved coldness from her.
As the car came to a halt outside the huge building on the Upper East Side, she prepared herself to see him again. For some reason, two weeks felt like a lifetime away from him, and she hated to admit it, but deep down, she missed him a lot. She found herself thinking about him more than she had ever expected to.
She told herself it was going to be okay as she made her way up the floors of the building in the elevator. As soon as she reached the top floor, the metal doors opened before her, and before she could even step out, she came face-to-face with Anthony. He was taken aback by her appearance, too. Angela watched the shock melting away on his face as it turned into a smile when he spoke.
"Oh, Angela... I haven't seen you in quite some time."
Before she had the chance to say anything, he moved past her towards the elevator and spoke.
"Either way, it's good to have you back."
She smiled instantly and offered him a friendly nod. She made her way inside the penthouse, and the place pretty much looked the same to her. She felt like she was home again. She looked around, but there was no sign of David.
Angela carefully made her way towards the hallway leading to his room, and as she was lost in her thoughts, she barely even realized it until it was too late. Before she knew it, her whole body bumped into someone else's. She squeezed her eyes shut in shock, but she needed to open them. She already knew who it was. The smell of the familiar deodorant spread through her body, and she froze in place. His skin made contact with hers, and her heart skipped a beat right away. Angela almost tripped over her own feet, but he was quick to reach over and grab her by her arms instantly without even letting her go; she felt his grip tightening on her, and she gulped to herself.
He suddenly pulled her closer to him, and she felt his breath slightly grazing her skin as he whispered to her.
“I missed you.”
Slowly, her eyelids began to flicker open. She looked around, and a small smile spread across her face right away when she saw the same honey brown eyes staring back at her.
She couldn't fight the smile that began to spread across her face slowly. She noticed that his grip began to tighten on her, and he wasn't one to let her go anytime soon. The feeling alone was enough for her to want him more. He placed her on the ground carefully and made sure that she was steady; only then did he let go of her arms. She looked up and spoke before he had the chance to do so.
"I missed you too, David."
In the distance, the whole city was glowing beneath them; it seemed as if the city never slept. The cars were still moving around, cabs were honking at each other, and people were on the streets, some walking hand in hand while others had cigarettes as their companions. Angela's eyes were fixated on David; at the moment, it was as if there was no one else in the room, that it was just them, and nothing else mattered.
He carefully placed his hand to the side of her face, and she immediately fell into a calm resting position. David's hand was caressing the side of her face as he spoke in a gentle tone.
“How are you holding up?”
Angela didn't know what to say at first, but she knew she he was the one person she could say anything to, and he would simply just be there for her.
She looked away from him; her eyes began to slowly trace the ground as she spoke in a hushed tone.
"Well, I went to visit Toby."
Before she could even go on, she noticed the way he raised his eyebrows in shock, but he didn't say anything; instead, he waited for her to go on.
"Thank you for talking to him. As much as it hurt seeing him like that, I know he's going to be okay, and knowing he doesn't blame me for what happened gives me peace."
She watched the smile spreading across David’s face. He moved forward and grabbed onto her as he whispered under his breath.
“You don’t have to thank me for anything.”
She felt her eyelids starting to feel heavy; she couldn't remember the last time she had a good night's sleep. She hadn't even said anything yet; David simply picked up on the way she looked tired and worn out. Without another word, he pointed down the hallway leading to his bedroom as he spoke to her.
"You want to sleep at mine tonight? You seem tired; let me take care of you, Angela."
She felt it in his words that he had really missed her. A smile spread across her face as she spoke to him gently.
"You know what, yeah, I might just sleep over today."
As soon as the words left her mouth, the unexpected happened. David reached down and grabbed her. He held her in his arms, and she shrieked, but he refused to put her down; she watched as he began to carry her towards the bedroom. She looked over at him; there were barely inches between the two of them when he reached down carefully and placed a kiss upon her forehead.
Suddenly, every other worry in the back of her mind began to melt away.
