Safe personal care products are an incredibly important aspect of your lifelong beauty and health, as they have major influence on your chemical exposures and hormonal balance. If you haven’t yet turned over the label to get a closer look at what’s in the products you use every day, start now. To make the biggest impact on your health with the least amount of effort, pick one of the products you use most regularly, like a deodorant you wear daily or a lipstick you apply and reapply each day, or something you apply over a large surface area of your body, like a body lotion that you slather on head to toe. Make sure your formula is free of some of the most consistent offenders: hormone-disrupting parabens and phthalates; antibacterial compounds like triclosan; synthetic colors, fragrances and dyes; and chemical sunscreens, like oxybenzone. If you spot some of these ingredients, replace the product with one displaying a certified organic seal on the packaging, or made with ingredients you recognize—like shea butter, coconut oil, or green tea. You’ll be detoxing your body simply by reducing the amount of chemicals you take in each day. How quickly can detox take place inside your body? One recent study showed that women who switched their conventional personal care products to natural versions experienced a 27 to 45 percent reduction in levels of potentially harmful ingredients like parabens, phthalates, triclosan, and oxybenzone in their urine after just three days.
