SPRING DAY 56

Kitchen Inspiration

These days, coconut can be purchased in so many different forms—coconut water, coconut oil, coconut flour, and coconut sugar, to name a few—that it can be overwhelming to know which offer the most beauty benefits. The answer depends on your diet and preferences, but I have a few favorites: coconut oil, coconut milk, and coconut butter, as well as unsweetened coconut flakes, from which coconut butter is ground. Because these particular products are made or extracted from whole, fresh coconuts, they deliver anti-inflammatory medium-chain fats (which are excellent for energy and metabolism) as well as the antimicrobial fat lauric acid—what I see as the two most beneficial nutritional components of coconuts. As for other coconut products, they don’t include as many of the beauty-supporting fats, but they do have their own distinct benefits. For example, coconut water is excellent for quick rehydration and electrolyte balance, making it a great post-workout thirst quencher. Coconut flour is an iron- and fiber-rich, gluten-free flour, while coconut sugar is a low glycemic sugar alternative made from the sap of the palm tree. Swap them into a dessert recipe when you want to make a skin-friendly treat.
