SUMMER DAY 91

Beauty Science

After cooking there’s nothing more tempting than loading the dishwasher and letting an appliance do all the cleanup. But even if you have a dishwasher at the ready you may want to consider hand-washing your dishes now and then, especially if you tend to have allergic eczema, a common beauty woe. Turns out that little doses of microbes, like the ones that hang out on your dishes when they haven’t been sanitized in a dishwasher’s high-heat wash, are good for you. One recent study of over one thousand families found that only 23 percent of children in hand-dishwashing households had eczema, compared to 38 percent of children in dishwasher households. While you certainly don’t need to shut down your dishwasher for good, this is more evidence that being a little less-than-clean can actually have beauty benefits. Double those benefits by using the extra time at the sink for self-reflection or deep breathing while you digest.
