One of the benefits of meditation is the heightened mental focus that comes from regularly tuning out the world. But if sitting down and being still for seated meditation seems daunting, consider that you can cultivate improved mental focus simply by keeping your multitasking to a minimum. Focusing on one task at a time, and returning your focus to that task whenever you get distracted, is a form of meditation. Research shows that multitasking all the time leaves us unable to concentrate, even when we’re not working toward a goal. Our minds flit from one idea to the next and we have trouble establishing uninterrupted focus. On the other hand, concentrating on just one task at a time can reverse that trend and add increased focus, mindfulness, and peace to your days. Build mindfulness in your life this week by being present and focused on one thing at a time, whether you’re at work or home. You’ll retrain your mind and lower your stress at the same time.
