WINTER DAY 37

Intention of the Week

image EAT MORE CRUCIFEROUS VEGETABLES image

Cruciferous vegetables, the family that includes broccoli, cauliflower, and a host of other beauty superfoods, are incredibly powerful tools for healthy aging. Cruciferous vegetables contain phytochemicals called isothiocyanates, which activate Nrf2, a transcription factor that turns on protective genes associated with antioxidant power and lower inflammation. This family of veggies can also detox excess estrogens from the body that can negatively impact mood and weight and increase risk of breast and ovarian cancers. And while we sometimes think we eat plenty of our cruciferous favorites, we often come up short. This week, go for extra helpings of Brussels sprouts, kale, arugula, and cauliflower. Seek out bok choy, broccoli rabe, collard greens, kohlrabi, radishes, and horseradish if they haven’t landed on your plate in awhile. And know that every bite is brimming with the power to help you age well.
