Diamond Lace Socks

DESIGNED BY KIM KOTARY

A pretty lace pattern takes these socks from basic to beautiful, while the open stitches make them comfortable to wear and breathable, too. What’s more, they are constructed from the toe up, which means you can try them on as you go—guaranteeing a perfect fit every time. If you haven’t tried crocheting socks, take the plunge—this pattern will get you hooked!

To fit Women’s shoe sizes 6–9

Yarn

Fingering (#1 Super Fine).

Hook

Size U.S. Steel 0 (3.25 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge.

Notions

Yarn needle; stitch markers.

Gauge

28 sts and 29 rows = 4" (10 cm) in single crochet (sc) worked in continuous rounds.

STITCH GUIDE

Fsc (Foundation single crochet)

Start with a slipknot on hook, chain 2, insert hook in 2nd chain from hook, pull up loop, yarn over, draw through 1 loop (the “chain”), yarn over and draw through 2 loops (the single crochet)—1 sc with its own ch st at the bottom made, *insert hook under 2 loops of the “ch” st of last st and pull up loop, yarn over and draw through 1 loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops, repeat from * for length of foundation.

NOTES

Sock is worked from the toe up in continuous rounds without joining.

Move marker up each round unless otherwise indicated.

Instructions

Toe

Rnd 1: Ch 2, work 14 Fsc, sc in base of last Fsc, pm, sc in same st as work is rotated. Working in base ch, sc in each st across, pm, work another sc in base of first st of rnd—30 sts, do not join but cont to work in rnds.

Rnds 2–8: Sc in each st and 2 sc in the st before and st after each marker—58 sts at end of Rnd 8. Remove markers for increases and pm in last st of rnd.

Rnds 9–17: Work even, moving marker to last st of each rnd.

Rnd 18: Sc in next 58 sts, sc2tog, sc in next st, pm—57 sts.

Instep Lace Pattern

Rnd 1: [Ch 5, sk 3 sc, sc in next 5 sts] 7 times.

Rnd 2: [Ch 3, sc in ch-sp, ch 3, sk 1 sc, sc in next 3 sc] 7 times.

Rnd 3: [Ch 3, sc in ch-sp, sc in sc, sc in ch-sp, ch 3, sk 1 sc, sc in next sc] 7 times, ch 3.

Rnd 4: [Sc in next ch-sp, sc in next 3 sc, sc in next ch-sp,* ch 5] 7 times.

Rnd 5: Sk next ch-sp & sc, [sc in next 3 sc, ch 3, sc in ch-sp, ch 3, sk 1 sc] 7 times.

Rnd 6: [Sc in next sc, ch 3, sc in ch-sp, sc in sc, sc in ch-sp,* ch 3, sk 1 sc] 7 times ending last rep at *, ch 5.

Rnd 7: Rep Rnd 4 ending last rep at *.

Rnd 8: Rep Rnd 2 starting in same ch-sp as last sc.

Rnds 9–26: Rep Rnds 3–8 three more times.

Heel Opening

Rnd 27: Ch 3, sc in ch-sp, sc in sc, work 33 Fsc, sk 13 sc, sc in next sc. [Ch 3, sc in ch-sp, sc in sc, sc in ch-sp, ch 3, sk 1 sc, sc in next sc] 3 times, ch 3—(row 3 of lace patt).

Rnd 28: Sc in ch-sp, sc in next 4 sc, [ch 5, sk 3 sc, sc in next 5 sc] 4 times, [ch 5, sc in next ch-sp, sc in next 3 sc, sc in next ch-sp] 3 times, ch 5—(row 4 of lace patt).

Ankle

Continue in lace pattern as established with 8 reps in each rnd until ankle measures about 4" (10 cm) from Rnd 27 or to desired length ending with pattern Rnd 3.

Edging

Rnd 1: *Sk 1 sc, sc in next sc, [ch 3, sc in next ch-sp] 2 times, ch 3. Rep from * around, omitting last ch 3. Ch1, hdc in 1st sc of rnd to join.

Rnds 2–3: Working in continuous rnds, [ch 3, sc in ch-sp]. Fasten off, weave in end.

Afterthought Heel

With RS facing, join yarn at one side of opening. Work 62 sc evenly spaced around heel opening. Begin working continuous rnds, work 1 rnd even. Place one marker on each side with 30 sts between the markers on each side. Sc in each st around, sc2tog before and after each marked st until 26 sts remain. Fasten off, leaving a tail to whipstitch the opening closed from the wrong side. Weave in the end.
