Flowering Change Purse

DESIGNED BY AMY POLCYN

A charming hinged frame takes this little purse from simple to special. It’s a perfect catch-all for anything from spare change to makeup. Make as many as you wish; they can even hold your buttons and notions! This purse makes a great gift for girlfriends of all ages.

Finished Measurements

6" (15 cm) wide (at widest point) by 6" (15 cm) high.

DK weight (#3 Light).

Hook

Size F (3.75 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge.

Inazuma Purse Frame #BK-1275, 4¾" × 3¼" (12 cm × 8.5 cm); tapestry needle.

Gauge

16 sts and 18 rows = 4" (10 cm) in sc stitch using size F (3.75 mm) hook.

STITCH GUIDE

Sc2tOg (Single crochet 2 together)

Insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up loop (2 loops on hook), insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up loop (3 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

Tr (Treble crochet)

*Yarn over 2 times, insert hook in stitch, yarn over and pull up loop (4 loops on hook), yarn over and draw through 2 loops, yarn over and draw through 2 loops, yarn over and draw through remaining 2 loops; repeat from *.

Dtr (Double treble crochet)

Yarn over 3 times, insert hook in stitch, yarn over and pull up loop, [yarn over, draw through 2 loops on hook] 4 times.

Instructions

Panel (make 2)

With MC, ch 17.

Row 1 (RS): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across—16 sc. Turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc across. Turn.

Rep Row 2 until piece measures 1" (2.5 cm) from beg.

Next (inc) row: Ch 1, 2 sc in first sc, sc in each sc across to last sc, 2 sc in last sc—18 sc. Turn.

Next row: Ch 1, sc in each sc across. Turn.

Rep last row until piece measures 2" (5 cm) from beg.

Rep inc row every other row 3 times—24 sts.

Work even in sc for 4 rows.

Next (dec) row: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in each sc to last 2 sc, sc2tog—22 sc. Turn.

Rep dec row every other row 2 more times—18 sc.

Next row: Ch 1, *sc2tog; rep from * across—9 sc. Fasten off.

Flower (make 2)

With B, ch 5. Join with a sl st to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, work 10 sc in ring, join with a sl st in first sc. Do not turn.

Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc around, join with a sl st in first sc. Do not turn.

Rnd 3: Ch 2 (counts as hdc), work 2 hdc in next 9 sc, hdc in same sc as ch 2, join with sl st to ch 2—20 hdc. Do not turn. Fasten off.

Rnd 4: Join A with a sl st in front loop of any hdc. *Ch 2, working in front loops only, 2 hdc in each of next 3 hdc, ch 2, sl st in next hdc; rep from * around, join with a sl st in first sl st—5 petals. Do not turn.

Rnd 5: Working in back loops only of Rnd 3, sl st in first hdc, *ch 4, 2 dtr in each of the next 3 hdc (behind petal), ch 4, sl st in next hdc; rep from * around, ending with ch 4 and join with a sl st in first sl st—5 petals. Fasten off.

Flower Centers (make 2)

With MC, ch 5. Join with a sl st to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, work 10 sc in ring, join with a sl st in Erst sc. Fasten off.

Leaves (make 2)

With C, ch 11.

Rnd 1: Working in top edge of ch, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next 2 ch, dc in next 2 ch, tr in next ch, dc in next ch, hdc in next ch, 3 sc in last ch. Continuing on opposite edge of ch, work hdc in next ch, dc in next ch, tr in next ch, dc in next 2 ch, hdc in next 2 ch, sc in next 2 ch, join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off.

Finishing

Sew flower centers to flowers. Place 1 flower on each side of bag and sew in place around inner edge of petals. Arrange 2 leaves on each side of bag and sew in place down center of each leaf.

Put WS of front and back tog. With MC, work a row of sc around outside edges of bag, working through both layers leaving 2" (5 cm) top for opening. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Attach purse frame following manufacturer’s instructions.
