Chunky Flower Brooch

Brighten up almost anything with these crochet blossoms. Each one takes just minutes to stitch, and they’re the perfect embellishment for a winter coat, hat, tote—or any piece that needs a little crafty flair. Wear them one at a time or cluster them for a veritable bouquet of color.

Finished Measurements

Large Leaf: 3" (7.5 cm) long by 1¾" (4.5 cm) wide.

Small Leaf: 2¼" (5.5 cm) long by 1¼" (3 cm) wide.

Center Flower: 2¼" (5.5 cm) diameter.

Outer Ruffled Flower: 3" (7.5 cm) diameter.

Yarn

Chunky weight (#5 Bulky).

Hook

Size H (5 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge.

Notions

Stitch marker (optional); tapestry needle; brooch pin fasteners; hot glue gun.

Gauge

16 sts = 4" (10 cm) in dc stitch using size H (5 mm) hook.

Take time to check gauge.

FLOWER OPTIONS

Flower A

2 large leaves in A, center flower in C, petals in D, and outer ruffled flower in B.

Flower B

3 small leaves in A, center flower in D, petals in C, and outer ruffled flower in B.

Flower C

2 large leaves in A, center flower in C, petals in B, and outer ruffled flower in D.

NOTE

When fastening off, leave at least 6" (15 cm) tail for sewing.

Instructions

Large Leaf

Ch 10 with A.

Rnd 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next 2 ch, dc in next 2 ch, tr in next 3 ch, 8 tr in 1st ch. Turn leaf and work into the back of chain, tr in next 3 ch, dc in next 2 ch, hdc in next 2 ch, sc in last ch. Join with sl st to 1st sc. Fasten off.

Small Leaf

Ch 7 with A.

Rnd 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in next 2 ch, dc in next 2 ch, 6 dc in 1st ch. Turn leaf and work into the back of chain, dc in next 2 ch, hdc in next 2 ch, sc in last ch. Join with sl st in 1st sc. Fasten off.

Center Flower

Note: Rounds are worked in spiral; do not join at end of rnds. You may wish to place a marker for beg of rnd and move marker up as work progresses.

Ch 3, join with sl st to 1st sc.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in loop. Do not turn.

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around—12sc. Do not turn. Fasten off. Attach contrasting color with sl st.

Rnd 3: Ch 4 (counts as sc and ch 3), *skip next sc, sc in next sc, ch 3; rep from * around. Do not turn.

Rnd 4: *Sc, 3 hdc, sc in ch-3 sp; rep from * around. Do not turn. Fasten off. Reattach contrasting color at an unworked sc of the initial color using a sl st.

Rnd 5: In the sc, work *1 sc, 3 hdc, 1 sc; rep from * around in each unworked sc from Rnd 3. Fasten off.

Outer Ruffled Flower

Note: Rounds are worked in spiral; do not join at end of rnds. You may wish to place a marker for beg of rnd and move marker up as work progresses.

Ch 3, join with sl st to 1st sc.

Rnd 1: 6 sc in loop. Do not turn.

Rnd 2: 2 sc in each sc around—12 sc. Do not turn.

Rnd 3: *Sc next sc, 2 sc in next sc; rep from * around—18 sc. Do not turn.

Rnd 4: *Sc in next sc, ch 4, sl st in 2nd, 3rd and 4th ch from hook, sl st into first sc worked; rep from * around—18 ruffles.

Finishing

Place center flower on outer ruffled flower and sew together. Sew leaves in back. Glue brooch pin fastener to back. Weave in all ends.
