Chapter 2

Embracing Conscious Conception

WHILE TEENS AND 20-SOMETHINGS SEEM TO GET PREGNANT JUST BY LOOKING AT EACH OTHER, many couples these days wait until they’re older to start a family—either by choice (often career-related) or circumstance (like finding the right partner).

It’s common for successful women to think of baby-making as another goal to accomplish, but getting pregnant is not like getting straight As or winning a big account. Like it or not, becoming a parent is not something that can be completely controlled.

Plus, the media does us no favors—constantly portraying women in their 40s and 50s pregnant and playing with their babies at the park. What you don’t see in the tabloids are the struggles endured, money spent, and avenues taken for these women to become mothers.

We’re going to invite you to switch gears just a bit. It’s time to make space for a baby. While a bigger house might be nice, what we’re really talking about here is making space in your life.

Take a moment to consider several simple but profound concepts: happiness, health, harmony in your primary relationships, and a connection to spirit (in whatever form that may take for you). How are you doing in these departments? Got any room for improvement?

Are you a workaholic, barely finding time to sit down or connect with your partner, family, or friends? Do you tend to succeed at most things you set your mind to? Does making a baby seem like another project on your checklist to accomplish?

While getting pregnant requires successful biology, your humanity plays a big role in its success. Don’t panic—you don’t have to become an om-chanting hippy to embrace “Conscious Conception.” Perhaps you can carve out a few minutes of quiet time each morning, find forgiveness for a family dispute, or take the time to walk outdoors with your partner once a week. Believe it or not, these actions can calm your nervous system, redirect your health, and improve your chances of getting pregnant and having a healthy baby.

By approaching baby-making from a Conscious Conception perspective, the intention shifts from “achieving” a pregnancy to “receiving” a baby into your body and your life. Not to mention, you’ll feel great in the process.
