If this was your first Nick & Carter book, you might want to try the very first novel I wrote: The Unexpected Heiress, the first title in the Nick Williams Mysteries series. It's all about the death of Nick's sister, Janet, and the unexpected things that happen in Nick's and Carter's lives as a result.
You could also go back to the first book in this particular series, An Enchanted Beginning, and discover how Nick and Carter first met.
Or... you could read the next book that, chronologically, follows this one in the world of Nick and Carter: The Mangled Mobster. It begins in June of 1954, about eight weeks after this novella ends.
