Naked-eye cluster. Start by appreciating this cluster with the naked eye. From a dark site, you can see a handful of stars at magnitude 5 in the Coma Berenices constellation. This is one of the closest clusters to Earth, so the stars appear spread out. The ancient Greeks identified this constellation as the end of the tail of Leo, the lion. Later, it honored the cut-off hair of Egyptian Queen Berenice—offered to the gods by her for the safe return of her husband from war.
Binocular view. Train your binoculars on this cluster and 50 more stars will appear. The Coma Star Cluster, also known as Melotte 111, is around 280 light-years away from Earth—twice as far as the Hyades cluster.
