Adding Friends to NOOK Friends

The first thing you’ll want to do is invite people to be NOOK Friends with you. After all, you can’t throw a party if you haven’t invited anyone.

Note

Even folks who don’t have a NOOK can still be your NOOK Friends. They won’t be able to participate fully—for example, they obviously won’t be able to download NOOK books. But they can still get recommendations, quotes from books, and so on. Friends who don’t have NOOKs still need a Barnes & Noble account, though. If they don’t already have one, they can sign up, either before you send an invitation, or while accepting your invitation.

To invite a friend:

  1. Tap the Add Friend button. A screen appears asking whether you want to use the NOOK Contacts app to invite friends, use Facebook, find friends from your Google contacts, or instead invite a friend via email.

  2. Tap one of the friend sources.

If you tap “Find friends from my contacts,” a screen appears with a list of contacts. At the top of the screen are contacts who are already using NOOK Friends, but aren’t your friend on it. Beneath that is a list of people on your Contacts who aren’t using yet NOOK Friends. Tap Add next to the names of people you want to add, and an invitation gets sent to them.

If you tap “Find friends from Facebook,” a screen appears with your Facebook friends who also are on NOOK Friends. Tap Add to send an invitation to any to become a NOOK Friend.

If you tap “Find friends from Google,” a screen appears that lets you link your NOOK to your Google or Gmail account. After you link the accounts, the NOOK will import your contacts into your Contacts app (Importing Facebook Contacts) and will also send you a notification asking if you want to invite any to become NOOK Friends. Tap the notifications, and then tap the name of the person you want to invite to be a friend, and follow the directions for sending an invitation.

If you tap “Invite a friend via email,” a screen appears that lets you type in the first name, last name, and email address of someone you want to invite to be your NOOK Friend. Fill in the form, tap Save, and the invitation goes on its merry way.

Note

If you have already imported contacts from Google into your NOOK’s Contacts app, the “Find friends from Google,” listing will not appear. You’ll receive a notification asking if you want to invite any to become NOOK Friends. Tap the notification, and then tap the name of the person you want to invite to be a friend, and follow the directions for sending an invitation.

When your invitation is accepted, you’ll get a notification. Tap it, and you’ll see the name of the person who accepted. From there, you can head straight to NOOK Friends and start interacting.

Other people can invite you to become a NOOK Friend, of course, and how you’ll get the invitation varies according to the way it was sent (email, Gmail, Facebook, and so on). But no matter how it was sent, click Confirm Friend, and you’ll be connected.

Once you’ve invited people to be your NOOK Friend (or you’ve been invited by others to be theirs), you can see them all by tapping the All Friends button at the top of the screen. You’ll see an alphabetical list of all of your NOOK Friends, including photographs if any are available of them (from their Facebook account). If you’ve got more friends than can fit on one screen (lucky you!), you can scroll through them.

Sometimes even good friends have a falling out, so you can remove someone from your NOOK Friends list by tapping the X next to his name. You’ll be asked whether you want to remove him from the list before he’s deleted, just to make sure it wasn’t a passing fancy.

To see a person’s most recent NOOK Friends activities, including books he has recommended, quotes he has shared, and so on (for details, see Getting Started with NOOK Friends), tap the person’s photograph (or generic person icon if there’s no photograph available). To see what books he has available for lending, tap LendMe.

To see all the invitations you’ve sent that have not yet been accepted, tap Pending. The screen is divided into two sections: Awaiting Confirmation and “Sent invitations.” In the “Sent Invitations” section, you’ll see names and photos of people to whom you’ve sent invitations, but who haven’t accepted yet. To cancel an invitation, tap the Cancel button. When someone accepts an invitation, they vanish from this area, and show up on your NOOK Friend list.

The Awaiting confirmation section shows all the invitations that have been sent to you that you haven’t yet accepted. Tap Accept to become a friend; tap Reject to turn down the invitation.
