Glossary

Some words I used in this story are not commonly used in standard English, so for those interested, I've compiled a short list of the terms and their meanings.

Aiya — Ouch

Arisaid — Scottish woman's dress similar to a Highlander's great kilt

Blether — Babble, talk nonsense

Braw — beautiful, fine, or handsome

Claymore — A double-edged sword that Highlanders used

Leine — Undershirt worn underneath a kilt or kirtle

Michaelmas — Feast of St. Michael the Archangel which is celebrated on September 29th of each year

Och — Oh

Sassenach — An English person, or a Lowland Scot

Shellycoat — A bogeyman who haunts the Scottish rivers and streams. He's said to wear a coat of shells which rattle when he moves

Sporran — A pouch or purse worn around the waist, and hangs at the front of the kilt

Tanist — Usually elected, this person is the next in line to become chief
