A note on minimalist footwear:
The following is a list of minimal/transitioning-to-minimal shoes. Some I have worn, some have been worn and recommended by friends and family, and the rest have been recommended by my readers.
Out of all the “minimal” characteristics, I have found it easiest to find non-heeled shoes. While minimal shoes tend to have more toe-box space than conventional shoes, many minimal styles still have a narrow toe-boxes compared to the width your toes will eventually occupy.
One great tip for selecting an appropriate toe box width is to trace your bare foot—toes spread—on paper and then place a potential shoe on top of the drawing to see how they compare. This is one way to see the potential restrictions your shoe might be placing on your toe spreading.
When it comes to selecting a shoe, know that shoe sizing isn’t as standard as it seems. Try on many shoes to get a feel for what you need, exactly. And know that, as you do your corrective exercises and habit modifications, the size and shape of your foot will change. What works for you this week might not work in a year.
Another great shoe-shopping tip: if you’re going to run or walk in your shoes, try shoes on after a walk or a run, or at the end of the day when your feet are the largest. And, if a shoe doesn’t feel good in the store, you need a different style or size. Finding a comfortable shoe up front will save you time, money, and foot aches in the long run.
With new companies popping up all the time, this list is in no way exhaustive.
