STEP 5
PAYING FOR COLLEGE

A friend and I were celebrating over lunch. He had just written his last tuition check. My husband and I had the end in sight.

“It’s funny,” my friend said. “For years, I was terrorized by the unimaginable price of college. The cost projections were appalling. How was I ever going to pay? I saved some money but not enough. When my daughter started filling out applications, I lived every day with a stone-cold fear.

“Then I borrowed some money through one of those college payment plans, and suddenly it was over. And it wasn’t so bad.

“I suppose,” he went on, “that if I hadn’t been scared into saving some money, I couldn’t have done it. But in the end, I lived.”

I recount this story just to remind you that almost every child who wants to go to college gets there. Savings, earnings, loans, and tuition discounts foot the bill.

When your children graduate, life resumes.
