That night, the four of them gathered in Lauren and Mitch’s kitchen. They’d just enjoyed a dinner of pizza, soon to be followed by strawberry cupcakes.
“I hope Brooke will be okay,” Lauren remarked. “She looked shaken when we all left the salon.”
“Brrt.” Annie sat next to her, while Mitch was on her other side.
“I’m sure she’ll be fine,” Mitch reassured her. “We can go over and check on her tomorrow, if you’d like.”
“I would like.” She smiled at him.
“I’ll come too,” Zoe announced. “I’ll have to make another appointment to get my hair cut, anyway.”
“I guess it’s not every day you catch a killer in a hair salon,” Chris mused. “I’m just glad you’re okay.” He sat next to Zoe, and captured her hand.
“Me too. Lucky I bought those bargain magic handcuffs after all!”
“Brrt!”
“What happened with Detective Castern’s gas thief case?” she asked.
“He caught the thieves this afternoon. It was a couple of teenagers who thought it would be fun.” Mitch shook his head. “They probably don’t think that now.”
“I’m glad they can’t target anyone else,” Lauren said.
“Me too.” Zoe nodded.
“Definitely,” Chris stated.
There was a little pause.
“And now, we have some exciting news to tell you.” Zoe glanced at Chris, who nodded at her, a smile on his face. “We heard back from the new landlord.”
“About the house you viewed last weekend?” Lauren asked. She couldn’t believe it had only been a week ago.
“The very same.” Suppressed excitement flickered on Zoe’s face.
“And?” Mitch prompted.
“Brrt?” Annie’s ears pricked.
“You know how your next-door neighbor is always away visiting his family?”
“Yes,” Lauren replied.
“Well, that was his house we looked at last weekend.” Zoe pointed her thumb to her right.
“He’s decided to move in with them permanently – or at least semi-permanently,” Chris added, “but he didn’t want to sell.”
“Yeah, he’s the guy that Bryce, the new real estate agent, told us about a couple of months ago. The old time local who was interested in selling his house? Well, he changed his mind pretty quickly, didn’t take to Bryce apparently.” Zoe giggled. “So, he thought about it for a while, and then decided to rent out his house instead.”
“And?” Lauren held her breath.
“Hi, neighbor!” Zoe grinned.
“Brrt!”
