So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
GENESIS 1:27
Have you ever seen a face in the clouds? People have seen human faces in trees, in clouds, on the moon and Mars, and in the stars. Around the world there are rock formations that resemble faces when viewed from the right angle. One well-known example was the Old Man of the Mountain in New Hampshire. It was a granite formation on Cannon Mountain that looked like a man’s profile; sadly, it crumbed and collapsed on May 3, 2003. Daniel Webster, who was born and raised in New Hampshire, had written about it, “Men hang out their signs indicative of their respective trades; shoe makers hang out a gigantic shoe; jewelers a monster watch, and the dentist hangs out a gold tooth; but up in the Mountains of New Hampshire, God Almighty has hung out a sign to show that there He makes men.”
Just as we see faces in nature, we can also find some of God’s attributes in the people around us. Although we are all sinful and the image of God in us is marred, there is something of His image lingering still. When we remember this, it can help us to treat one another with kindness and respect. Even those people who drive us crazy or do things we can’t understand are created by God and loved by Him. Our value is rooted in the facts that God created us and loved us enough to sacrifice His Son to redeem us. It may take some effort to see His stamp on some of our fellow humans, but it is there.
