SETTING

Scenes take place on Ambertrue in 1931, a contemporary homestead, the riverbank, a paddock, a community hall, an office, and the street.

The original set was a packed red-earth floor, with a gumleaf-encrusted curtain snaking across the space, used to define acting areas as required. There was a single table for the household, and the rest of the acting space was bare.

The transitions between past and present were ‘soft’, scenes set in the present began while the ‘past’ characters were still on stage and vice versa.

At the end of the play the rear doors of the theatre opened, and Edie and Cathy walked out together into the night, towards the (actual) trees and the river beyond.
