Amulet: A type of herbal charm, ornament, or jewel that aids and protects its wearer. Amulets are passive; they do not project outward. They react to whatever is happening in the wearer’s world. See Chapter Six.
Banishing: A magickal act that removes negativity or baneful magick from your life.
Charge: To fill or imbue an object with magickal energy, such as empowering spell candles. See Chapter Three.
Charm: (1) A rhyming series of words or a simple spell used for specific magickal purposes. (2) An object of magickal power such as an amulet or talisman. (3) A small object worn on a bracelet or chain. Chapter Three.
Charm Bag: Similar to a sachet, a charm bag is a small cloth bag filled with herbs, charged crystals, and other magickal ingredients.
Circle: An informal group of Witches or Wiccans who study and practice magick together.
Correspondences: A magickal classification system of interrelations by which all things are categorized.
Coven: A group of Witches or Wiccans who practice magick together and worship together, with formalized rules, degree systems, training, and ritual practices.
Craft: The Witch’s name for the Old Religion and the practice of Witchcraft.
Elements: The four natural elements are air, fire, water, and earth.
Enchantment: An act of magick. This word is often used interchangeably with the word spell.
Herb: A plant used for medicine, flavoring, food, or scent. Any part of the plant—the roots, stem, bark, leaves, seeds, or flowers—may be used for such purposes. An herb may be a tree, shrub, woody perennial, flower, annual, or fern.
Herbalism: Also known as herbal magick. The use of herbs in conjunction with magick to bring about positive change and transformation.
Hermetic Principles: The seven Hermetic principles are a set of philosophical beliefs based upon the ancient writings of Hermes Trismegistus. The Hermetic principles are like building blocks—they support one another—and the first principle is the foundation, with each principle supporting the next one. See Chapter One.
Law of Attraction: The law by which thought connects with its object—in this case, its objective. It enlightens us by showing that our thoughts are actual energy. Your thoughts manifest as vibrations, and that vibratory energy ripples out into the universe and becomes real. Thought creates! See Chapter One.
Magick: The combination of your own personal power that is used in harmony with natural objects such as herbs, crystals, and the elements. Once these are combined and your goal is focused upon, typically by the act of repeating a spell verse and lighting a candle or creating an herbal charm, the act of magick then creates a positive change.
Natural Magick: A style of magick that works in harmony with the various powers of the natural world and the four elements of earth, air, fire, and water.
Personal Magickal Energy (PME): Represents the amount of thought, effort, style, and power that you put into a prosperity spell when you first cast it. When you add up all those factors, you have a PME number. See Chapter Seven.
Rune: A sign or character in any of the runic futharks. Runes are figures from an ancient alphabet that are used as a divinatory system, and the symbols are often used in spellcraft.
Spell: A series of rhyming words that verbally announces the spellcaster’s intention. When these spoken words are combined with specific actions such as lighting a candle, creating an amulet, or gathering an herb, this is then worked in harmony with the tides of nature and, combined with the spellcaster’s personal energy, endows the magickal act with the power to create positive change.
Talisman: An object created from any type of material with a specific goal in mind such as increasing power or bestowing extra protection. See Chapter Six.
Thaumaturgy: The use of magickal powers to influence or predict events. It can be defined as Witchcraft or conjuration. This type of magick is earthy and simple. It relies on the use of natural items. Practices like herb magick, crystal magick, candle magick, and sympathetic magick may be called low magick or, more correctly, practical magick.
Theurgy: Rituals that are designed to align oneself with the Divine or the angelic realms. Theurgy, also known as high magick, is a type of magickal practice that has its emphasis placed on more spiritual goals and communing directly with the Divine. High magick often incorporates mathematics, astrology, alchemy, and the Kabbalah.
Thoughtforms: Thoughtforms are created by strong positive thoughts or intense negative thoughts that then take on a life of their own and exist on the astral plane.
Wicca: A Neopagan earth religion. Its followers generally believe in harming no one with their magick. Wiccans follow and celebrate the seasons and cycles of the year, and see the Divine as both masculine and feminine.
Witch: A practitioner of magick. A Witch may not necessarily be a Wiccan. That being said, most Witches will work their magick from a place of neutrality. Witches know and accept that they are fully accountable and responsible for all of their actions on both mundane and magickal levels.
