Even if you’re planning to build your shipping container home in a climate that is mild, you should still insulate the home. Because shipping container homes are made of shipping containers, and shipping containers are metal, without insulation, you may find that your shipping container home is uncomfortably warm in the summer and/or cold in the winter, even in the mildest of climates.
Insulation doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. There are several different options to insulate your shipping container home, each providing a different level of insulation and coming in at a different price point. There are three broad types of insulation: panel insulation, spray foam insulation, and blanket insulation. Panel insulation is the simplest form of insulation to install. This insulation is expensive relative to other types, though, at about $1.20 per square foot. If you don’t have a professional helping you, though, it might be worth it to pay a slightly higher price to make sure you get it right when you do it yourself. Panel insulation also requires you to build wooden battens inside your home, which will eat into your living space a bit.
Blanket insulation also requires the installation of wooden battens, but is significantly cheaper than panel insulation. It will only cost you about $0.45 per square foot. Spray foam insulation is probably the most effective type of insulation, but is also the most complicated to install.
