8. How to insulate your shipping container home

image

Traditional homes are insulated using rock wool or Fiberglass batts. This method of insulation won’t do for shipping container homes, though, since it would lead to moisture infiltration, condensation, and corrosion on the interior walls. For shipping container homes, the best way to insulate is to use polyurethane foam or spray foam. This type of foam sticks directly to the containers walls and can be applied as thickly as you choose. It’s a very effective insulator and will help keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer. I recommend using spray foam insulation in the interior walls and, if you’re building in a climate that gets very hot or very cold, insulating the outside as well.

How does the insulation installation process work? My preferred method is to install a wood or steel frame just inside the container’s interior walls, then spraying the insulation between the studs. I then like to cover the studs with a panel covering and paint that covering like you would any other interior wall. I always advise my clients to insulate the ceiling in the same way.
